Traditionally a kaf crowned with a vav — the only letter that rises above the top line

The first lamed root is layil — 'and the darkness He called Night'
Messianic thread
Lamed stands at the alphabet's center and towers over it: the Teacher among the letters. Torah ends with lamed (Yisrael) and begins with bet — together lev, heart: the whole Torah bracketed by a heart, and the Good Shepherd's staff raised in its middle.
In the mystical tradition
The sages call lamed 'a tower flying in the air' — the heart ascending in contemplation. Its composition equals the Name: learning as ascent to God.
