What to look for
In the elder daughter's night in Lot's cave — 'he did not know when she lay down or when she arose' — a dot marks uvekumah.
What it is
A dotted word distinguishing two nearly identical verses: the same phrase in verse 35 (the younger daughter) carries no dot.
Why it matters
One dot is the entire commentary separating the two nights. The tradition reads it as a quiet contradiction of the verse's surface: her lying down he did not know — her arising, the dot suggests, he knew.
How it has been understood
It is among the most unsettling dots in Scripture, and the scribes did not look away. From this night comes Moab — and from Moab, Ruth, and from Ruth, David. The tradition lets judgment and redemption sit in the same marked word.
