What to look for
Inside behibar'am — 'these are the generations of the heavens and the earth when they were created' — the heh is written undersized.
What it is
A small letter (ot ketanah), the first of the Torah's diminished letters.
Why it matters
The tradition reads the small heh as a hidden word inside the word: b'heh bera'am, 'with a heh He created them' — the world spoken into being with the lightest breath in the alphabet.
How it has been understood
Heh is little more than an exhale, and the midrash marvels that creation required no more effort than that. Some also note this verse spells toledot ('generations') completely — one of only two such spellings in Scripture, the other in Ruth 4:18, hinting that creation's fullness awaits restoration through the line of redemption.
