What to look for
The yod opening yigdal ('let it be great') is enlarged — and yod is normally the smallest letter in the alphabet.
What it is
An enlarged letter at the climax of Moses' intercession after the sin of the spies.
Why it matters
Moses is asking God to show greatness not through judgment but through mercy — and the tiniest letter swells large in the very word 'be great.'
How it has been understood
Tradition connects this yod to the yod removed from Sarai's name when it became Sarah — a letter that waited to be restored, and was given to Yehoshua (Joshua), who stands in this very scene as one of the two faithful spies. Smallness exalted, in the letter and in the story.
