What to look for
In God's promise to Phinehas — 'behold, I give him My covenant of peace' — scribal tradition writes the vav of shalom with a break in its stem. In Torah scrolls the crack is unmistakable; in this codex, look closely at the vav.
What it is
The vav ketia, the 'severed vav' — a letter deliberately written broken, in the word peace.
Why it matters
Phinehas won this covenant through an act of violence. A peace obtained by the spear is real peace — but fractured, says the letter, and the fracture is preserved forever in the word itself.
How it has been understood
Tradition reads it both directions: peace that comes through zealotry always carries a crack — and yet the covenant holds despite the broken letter, because God's promise outlasts the wound. Some also read shalom with a broken vav as shalem, 'whole': wholeness and brokenness written into one word.
