The Dotted Aaron — Numbers 3:39

וְאַהֲרֹן

v'Aharon — “and Aaron”

The Dotted Aaron — Numbers 3:39 in the Leningrad Codex
Numbers 3:39 in the Leningrad Codex — the anomaly is marked.

What to look for

In the census total of the Levites 'whom Moses and Aaron counted,' dots stand over every letter of 'and Aaron.'

What it is

A fully dotted word in the wilderness census records.

Why it matters

The dots question Aaron's inclusion: was he among the counters, or should he be counted among the counted? The arithmetic of the chapter turns on it.

How it has been understood

The traditional resolution: Aaron was not himself numbered among the Levites here, and the dots gently lift his name out of the count. It is bookkeeping by dots — and a reminder that even the high priest's place in a list was weighed letter by letter.
