How Bahr Yussef ('Joseph's Canal') was found

The canal branches from the Nile near Dairut and runs about 300 km to the Fayum depression, feeding Lake Moeris (Birket Qarun). Middle Kingdom pharaohs Senusret II and Amenemhat III built dikes and regulators at its mouth.

What it is

A long natural side-channel of the Nile that 12th-Dynasty kings regulated to irrigate the Fayum and store flood water in Lake Moeris. Its Arabic name means 'Joseph's Sea' or 'Joseph's Waterway'.

Why it matters for the Bible

Local tradition, recorded by medieval Arab writers, says the canal was Yosef's project when he stored grain against famine. This is a tradition, not an archaeological finding: the channel is natural, the earliest engineering on it is Middle Kingdom, and no inscription connects it to Yosef. It is included because visitors often hear the claim, and because it shows how deeply Yosef's story rooted itself in Egyptian memory.
