How Capernaum Synagogue and 'Peter's House' was found

Corbo and Loffreda dug beneath the limestone synagogue and found basalt walls and a cobbled floor of a 1st-century building, with coins and pottery. Nearby they found a simple 1st-century house whose main room was plastered and used for gatherings by the late 1st century, then enclosed by a 4th-century house-church and a 5th-century octagonal church.

What it is

The standing synagogue is a fine white limestone basilica of the 4th–5th century, unusual in a black basalt town. Beneath it lie basalt foundations that the excavators date to the 1st century. About 30 meters south, the 'house of Peter' is a cluster of basalt rooms around courtyards; its central room has plastered walls with over 100 scratched graffiti in Greek, Aramaic, Syriac and Latin, some mentioning Jesus and Peter.

Why it matters for the Bible

Capernaum was Yeshua's 'own town' where he healed Peter's mother-in-law and taught in the synagogue. The basalt synagogue beneath the later one is very likely the building of Luke 7:5 that the centurion funded. The house's early conversion into a place of worship, and its later churches, make it the best candidate for the home of Peter mentioned in the Gospels, though the identification rests on tradition and the graffiti rather than proof.
