How Herodian Quarter and the Palatial Mansion was found
Excavated beneath the Jewish Quarter during reconstruction after 1967. Six houses were preserved under a modern building as the Wohl Archaeological Museum, including the 600-square-meter 'Palatial Mansion' with a large reception hall and many mikvaot.
What it is
A cluster of large two-story houses with courtyards, mosaic floors, painted plaster in Pompeian style, stucco ceilings, imported glass and fine tableware, dozens of stone vessels, and multiple stepped ritual baths in each home. One fresco fragment shows a seven-branched menorah, possibly drawn by someone who saw the Temple's.
Why it matters for the Bible
These were the homes of Jerusalem's priestly and wealthy families, in the district where the high priest's house stood. They show the luxury the Gospels hint at in the Sadducean elite and are a plausible setting for Yeshua's night trial before Annas and Caiaphas. The many private mikvaot show how central ritual purity was to these households.
The Hebrew word: to-ho-RAH
טָהֳרָה
טָהֳרָה is pronounced to-ho-RAH and means ritual purity (Strong's H2893).
