How Megiddo Ashlar Palaces (Stratum VA–IVB) was found

The Chicago team exposed Palace 1723 in the south with its courtyard and gatehouse. Yadin later cut beneath the 'stables' in the north and found Palace 6000, arguing both belonged to one Solomonic city with the six-chambered gate.

What it is

Two large public buildings of dressed ashlar masonry laid in the header-and-stretcher style. Palace 1723 stood inside a walled courtyard about 60 m square with its own small gate; Palace 6000 was a north-Syrian-style 'bit hilani' with a columned entrance. Proto-Aeolic capitals were found near both.

Why it matters for the Bible

These are the finest tenth/ninth-century buildings in Israel and show a royal builder using Phoenician-style masons, just as 1 Kings describes Hiram's craftsmen working for Shlomo (Solomon). Yadin saw them as the heart of Solomon's Megiddo, where his district governor Baana lived. Finkelstein dates the same stratum to the Omrides in the ninth century, and the two views have never been reconciled. Either way, the palaces show what royal architecture looked like in early Israel.

Debated: Buildings are undisputed; their date (Solomon vs. Omrides) is the core of the low-chronology debate.
