How Mount Tabor was found
Clearing the summit for the modern basilica exposed the Byzantine and Crusader church foundations, monastic buildings and a 12th-century fortress wall; earlier walls attributed to the Hellenistic and Roman periods, including Josephus' hasty rampart of 66 CE, ring the summit.
What it is
A lone dome-shaped mountain 575 m high rising from the Jezreel Valley. Its flat summit holds remains of three successive churches (Byzantine, 6th century; Crusader Benedictine, 12th century; modern basilica of 1924 that incorporates them), Crusader and Ayyubid fortification walls, and traces of the earlier Hellenistic and Roman defenses. The Byzantine church had three chapels for Yeshua, Moshe and Eliyahu, echoing Peter's three booths.
Why it matters for the Bible
In the Hebrew Bible Tabor is where Devorah (Deborah) and Barak gathered ten thousand men before defeating Sisera (Judges 4), and it was a border landmark of Zebulun, Issachar and Naphtali. From the 4th century Christians identified it as the 'high mountain' of the Transfiguration, a tradition Cyril of Jerusalem and Jerome record; the Gospels themselves do not name the mountain, and many scholars prefer Mount Hermon because Yeshua had just been at Caesarea Philippi. The mountain's visible archaeology tells of Josephus fortifying it in 66 CE and of pilgrims building here for 1,600 years.
The Hebrew word: Hahr Tah-VOHR
הַר תָּבוֹר
הַר תָּבוֹר is pronounced Hahr Tah-VOHR and means Mount Tabor; the psalmist pairs it with Hermon as mountains that 'rejoice in Your name' (Strong's H2022 + H8396).

What is Mount Tabor?

When was Mount Tabor discovered?
It was found in 1921 by Franciscan excavations under Gaudenzio Orfali (1921) ahead of Antonio Barluzzi's church (1924); later work by Bellarmino Bagatti and Virgilio Corbo; Israeli surveys of the Iron Age and Hellenistic fortifications, at Mount Tabor (Har Tavor), eastern Jezreel Valley, 17 km west of the Sea of Galilee.
Where is Mount Tabor today?
In situ; Franciscan Church of the Transfiguration and Greek Orthodox monastery on the summit.
Which Bible verses does Mount Tabor relate to?
Joshua 19:22, Judges 4:6-7, Matthew 17:1-3.
Is Mount Tabor authentic?
Tabor's role in Judges is secure. Its identification as the Transfiguration mountain is an early church tradition; Mount Hermon is at least as likely on the Gospel itinerary, and a fortified town on Tabor's summit in Yeshua's day makes a 'private' ascent there harder to picture.
