How Lydian Gold Refinery on the Pactolus, Sardis was found
Digging on the bank of the Pactolus stream, the team found low-fired brick furnaces, hundreds of small clay cupels, and a small altar of Cybele beside them. Later analysis with Paul Craddock (British Museum) proved the installation was a cementation and cupellation works for separating gold from silver.
What it is
A workshop area with rows of shallow hearths, fragments of hundreds of cupels (small clay dishes used to absorb lead when refining silver), pieces of cementation pots, and a stone altar of the mother-goddess Kuvava (Cybele) guarded by small lions. Gold particles were washed from the stream sands, then heated with salt to draw out silver.
Why it matters for the Bible
Sardis under Croesus minted the first pure gold and silver coins, and this is the factory that made it possible. It gives a real setting to the image of gold 'refined by fire' that Revelation 3:18 offers nearby Laodicea and that the prophets used for YHVH testing his people. The altar in the works shows how ancient industry and worship were joined — and how the wealth of Sardis, famous in the Bible's world, was made.
The Hebrew word: tsah-RAF
צָרַף
צָרַף is pronounced tsah-RAF and means to refine, smelt, test — used of God purifying his people like silver (Strong's H6884).
