How Skull Hill (Gordon's Calvary) was found
Thenius noticed that the cliff north of the Damascus Gate, with two cave openings that look like eye sockets, resembles a skull. Gordon's 1883 visit and writings made the site famous among English-speaking Protestants, and the nearby Garden Tomb was bought in 1894.
What it is
A limestone scarp about 200 metres north of the Old City wall, its face left by ancient and later quarrying. Two eroded caves below the crest give the look of a skull; Jeremiah's Grotto lies at its base. Nothing built or inscribed connects it to a crucifixion.
Why it matters for the Bible
The Gospels say Yeshua was crucified at 'the Place of the Skull', outside the city and near a garden with a new tomb. Skull Hill fits the name and is outside the walls, which drew 19th-century Protestants who disliked the crowded Holy Sepulchre. Archaeologically it is weak: the 'face' is the product of quarrying and erosion, much of it after Roman times, and the tomb beside it is Iron Age. Most scholars, including many evangelicals, hold that the Holy Sepulchre site has the stronger claim, while valuing the Garden Tomb as a place of worship.
The Hebrew word: gool-GOH-let
גֻּלְגֹּלֶת
גֻּלְגֹּלֶת is pronounced gool-GOH-let and means skull; the source of the name Golgotha (Strong's H1538 / G1115).

Is Skull Hill (Gordon's Calvary) authentic?
The hill is real and the skull-like look is real, but there is no archaeological evidence that it was the crucifixion site. The resemblance results from quarrying and erosion of uncertain date, and the adjacent Garden Tomb dates to the 8th–7th centuries BCE (Gabriel Barkay). Most archaeologists favor the Holy Sepulchre location.
