Excavation under a ruined chapel on the lakeshore at Tabgha (Heptapegon, 'seven springs') exposed a large three-aisled basilica with mosaic floors; the small 4th-century chapel beneath it was found in the same campaign. The mosaics were re-excavated and the church rebuilt over them in 1980–1982.

What it is

A Byzantine basilica about 56 m long whose floors carry some of the finest mosaics in the Holy Land: Nile-style scenes of lotus, herons, ducks and a 'nilometer' tower, and in front of the altar the famous panel of two fish flanking a basket holding four loaves of bread. Beneath the altar is a block of native limestone that pilgrims from at least the 4th century believed was the rock on which Yeshua laid the bread. A tiny 4th-century chapel lies underneath the basilica.

Why it matters for the Bible

The mosaic is the earliest surviving artistic memory of the feeding miracle at the place where Christians located it. Egeria, a pilgrim around 380 CE, described this same shore with its stone 'on which the Lord placed the bread', so the tradition is older than the church. The mosaic shows four loaves, not five; the fifth, tradition says, is on the altar in the bread of communion. The site does not prove the miracle; it shows how early and how firmly believers tied Yeshua's Galilean ministry to specific spots on this shore, near Capernaum and the 'Sermon on the Mount' hill above.
