Adonai — Lord

אֲדֹנָי

Adonai — pronounced ah-doh-NYE · appears ~439 (of God) times · Strong's H136

Lord, Master — the emphatic plural of adon; both a divine name in its own right and the spoken substitute for יהוה.

Every synagogue reading speaks Adonai where יהוה is written — the Name honored by substitution. Psalm 110:1's play between YHVH and Adon becomes the NT's favorite text for Messiah's lordship; both traditions meet at this word constantly, sometimes without knowing it.

First occurrence

Gen 15:2 — Abram's first recorded prayer opens 'Adonai YHVH'
