El
אֵל
God, Mighty One — the oldest Semitic word for deity, claimed and filled by the true God.
Jewish thought sees in El the raw word for might, sanctified into the names of angels (Micha-el) and people (Isra-el) alike. Christian thought traces it into Immanu-El — 'El with us.'
First occurrence
Gen 14:18 — On Melchizedek's lips, joined to Elyon
Key passages
Gen 33:20 — Jacob's altar: El-Elohei-Israel
Num 23:22 — 'El who brings them out of Egypt'
Isa 40:18 — 'To whom will you liken El?'
In the Greek Scriptures
Θεός
