Pater / Abba — Father
אַבָּא / אָבִינוּ
Father — Yeshua's characteristic address to God, with the intimate Aramaic Abba preserved untranslated three times.
Isaiah already prayed Avinu; Yeshua made Father the default address and handed it to His followers. That the church kept the Aramaic Abba on its lips in Greek letters shows how precious the sound itself was — a family word crossing every language since.
First occurrence
Matt 5:16 — 'Glorify your Father in heaven' — the Sermon's constant word
Key passages
Matt 6:9 — 'Our Father in heaven' — Avinu given to disciples
Mark 14:36 — 'Abba, Father' — Gethsemane
Rom 8:15 — 'The Spirit of adoption, by whom we cry Abba'
John 17:11 — 'Holy Father, keep them in Your name'
In the Greek Scriptures
Πατήρ / Ἀββά
