Pele Yoetz, Avi Ad, Sar Shalom — the Throne-Names of Isaiah 9:6
פֶּלֶא יוֹעֵץ אֲבִיעַד שַׂר־שָׁלוֹם
Wonderful Counselor, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace — three of the four names laid on the child of the throne prophecy (the fourth, El Gibbor, has its own entry).
Jewish reading takes the cluster as a sentence of praise naming God who upholds the Davidic king; Christian reading takes the names as the child's own — Wonder, Counsel, everlasting Fatherhood, and Peace crowning a son of David. The scribes sealed a mem inside this very verse, as if the mystery were locked into the letters.
First occurrence
Isa 9:6 — 'Unto us a child is born… and his name shall be called' — the verse of the unique closed mem
Key passages
Isa 9:7 — 'Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end'
Judg 13:18 — The Angel: 'Why ask my name, seeing it is Wonderful (peli)?'
