The number 153 in the Bible — The Great Catch

מֵאָה חֲמִשִּׁים וְשָׁלֹשׁ

me'ah chamishim v'shalosh · Greek: ἑκατὸν πεντήκοντα τρεῖς — hekaton pentēkonta treis

The count of fish in John 21 is oddly, deliberately precise. Proposals ancient and modern: the triangle of 17 (1+2+…+17 = 153); Jerome's claim that Greek naturalists counted 153 species — the catch as every nation; various gematria. John explains nothing, which may be the point: an eyewitness's real number, inviting the meditation it has received.
