The number 2 in the Bible — Balance · Witness · Confirmation

שְׁתַּיִם / שְׁנַיִם

shtayim / shnayim · Greek: δύο / δεύτερος — duo / deuteros (second)

Two is the minimum for valid testimony — "by the mouth of two or three witnesses shall a matter be established" — and Scripture leans on it constantly: two tablets, two spies with a true report, disciples sent two by two, the two witnesses of Revelation. Two is also balance and pairing, and division where balance fails: the second day, when the waters were divided, is the only day not called good. Bet the house is where two dwell as one — and the Torah's own first letter.
