The number 200 in the Bible — Outlook · Insufficiency

מָאתַיִם

matayim · Greek: διακόσιοι — diakosioi

Two hundred is the number of the human estimate that comes up short. Philip surveyed the crowd and calculated: two hundred denarii of bread is not sufficient — the outlook of arithmetic meeting the sufficiency of God. Achan's eye fell on two hundred shekels and the outlook became a grave; Absalom's two-hundred-shekel hair became his noose. Resh, the head, is exactly this: the reckoning — which without God is insufficiency crowned.
