The number 666 in the Bible — The Number of the Beast · The Number of a Man

שֵׁשׁ מֵאוֹת שִׁשִּׁים וָשֵׁשׁ

shesh me'ot shishim va'shesh · Greek: ἑξακόσιοι ἑξήκοντα ἕξ — hexakosioi hexēkonta hex

Revelation 13:18 is the one place Scripture explicitly commands a gematria calculation: 'calculate the number of the beast, for it is the number of a man: 666.' Triple six — mankind's number tripled, straining toward divine completeness and falling short in every digit. The majority scholarly reading computes Neron Kesar (נרון קסר) = 666, and the early manuscript variant 616 is the same name without the final nun — the variant confirming the method. Solomon's 666 talents of yearly gold stood at the hinge where his kingdom slid toward excess. The meaning is stable: man exalting himself in God's place, complete in his incompleteness.
