The letter itself preaches: tsadi is the root-letter of tsaddik, the righteous one. Sarah was ninety when the promise of Isaac came — nature exhausted, so that what was born would be born of promise, 'that righteousness might be counted by faith' as Paul argues from this very story. Abraham was ninety-nine when told 'walk before Me and be blameless.' Ninety is righteousness proved pure precisely where human strength has ended.
