What Happens in Nitzavim
You are standing — atem nitzavim — this day, all of you, before YHVH your God: your heads, your tribes, your elders, and your officers, all the men of Yisrael, your little ones, your wives, and the stranger in your camp, from the hewer of your wood to the drawer of your water. Nobody is too small for this covenant, and nobody is outside it — and it stretches past the living: neither with you only do I make this covenant and this oath, but with him who stands here with us this day, and also with him who is not here with us this day. Every future generation stands invisibly in that assembly. The warning is aimed at the secret heart: the man who hears the curse and blesses himself, saying, I shall have shalom, though I walk in the stubbornness of my heart. The hidden things belong to YHVH our God; but the things revealed belong to us and to our children forever.
Then Moshe looks past the failure he knows is coming, into the far side of exile — and writes the Torah's great prophecy of return, the teshuvah passage: when all these things have come upon you, the blessing and the curse... and you shall return to YHVH your God and obey His voice... then YHVH your God will restore your captivity and have compassion on you, and will gather you from all the peoples where He has scattered you. If your outcasts are at the ends of the heavens, from there YHVH your God will gather you. And deeper than regathering, a surgery of the heart: YHVH your God will circumcise your heart and the heart of your seed, to love YHVH your God with all your heart and with all your soul, that you may live. What Moshe commanded at Sinai, God here promises to do Himself: the very promise the prophets will call the new covenant.
And then the passage Paul quotes as the word of faith: for this commandment which I command you this day is not too hard for you, neither is it far off. It is not in heaven, that you should say, who shall go up for us to heaven and bring it to us... but the word is very near you, in your mouth and in your heart, that you may do it. Torah is not an unreachable summit; it is a word already placed within reach. The portion closes at the fork in the road, with all creation summoned to watch: I call heaven and earth to witness against you this day, that I have set before you life and death, the blessing and the curse. And then the plea that distills the whole covenant into three words: therefore choose life, that both you and your seed may live, to love YHVH your God, to obey His voice, and to cling to Him — for He is your life and the length of your days.
