What Happens in Tetzaveh
You shall command the children of Yisrael to bring pure beaten olive oil for the light, to cause the lamp to burn continually — the ner tamid, tended by Aharon and his sons from evening to morning before YHVH, a statute forever. Then the portion turns from the house to its servants: bring near Aharon your brother, and his sons with him, to minister to Me as priests. For them are made garments of glory and beauty, crafted by the wise-hearted whom God has filled with the spirit of skill — because those who carry a people into the presence of God should look like what they do.
The garments are described piece by piece, and each piece preaches. The ephod of gold, blue, purple, scarlet, and fine linen, with two onyx stones on its shoulders engraved with the names of the sons of Yisrael, six and six in birth order — Aharon shall bear their names before YHVH on his two shoulders for a memorial. The breastplate of judgment, doubled a span square, set with twelve stones in four rows, each engraved with a tribe's name — so Aharon shall bear the names of the sons of Yisrael on his heart when he goes into the holy place — with the Urim and Tummim within it. Shoulders and heart: the priest carries his people as both burden and love. The robe all of blue, hemmed with pomegranates of blue, purple, and scarlet alternating with bells of gold, its sound heard when he goes in and comes out; the embroidered tunic, the turban, the sash — and on the turban's front, a plate of pure gold engraved like a signet: HOLY TO YHVH, always on his forehead, that they may be accepted before YHVH.
Seven days of ordination follow, spelled out in advance: washing at the tent door, clothing and anointing, the sin-offering bull, the burnt-offering ram, and the ram of consecration whose blood touches the right ear, right thumb, and right big toe of each priest — hearing, doing, and walking claimed for God — with blood and anointing oil sprinkled on garments and men together. Then the portion sets the sanctuary's heartbeat: a lamb every morning and a lamb between the evenings, the continual burnt offering at the tent door, with fine flour, oil, and wine — and attached to that daily rhythm, the covenant purpose restated: there I will meet with the children of Yisrael... I will dwell among the children of Yisrael and will be their God, and they shall know that I am YHVH their God who brought them out of Egypt that I may dwell among them. The portion closes with the small golden altar of incense before the veil, fragrant smoke rising morning and evening with the tending of the lamps. One curiosity marks the whole portion: Moshe's name never appears in it — the only such portion from Exodus to Deuteronomy — while his brother's house fills every line.
