What the tribe was

'Gad, a troop shall overcome him: but he shall overcome at the last.' Settled in Gilead east of the Jordan, Gad lived on a raided frontier and bred warriors for it — 'men of might, men of war, faces like the faces of lions, swift as the roes upon the mountains' who crossed the flooding Jordan to David (1Chr 12:8-15). Moses praises Gad for choosing the portion where the lawgiver's own burial waited, and for executing the justice of the LORD. Elijah the Tishbite came from Gad's Gilead.
