The Tribe of Levi — the name, the blessing and the land

Lêvîy · pronounced lay-vee' · Strong's H3878 · named 61 times

The priestly tribe — no land, for the LORD is their inheritance

The tribe of Levi
Levi

What the tribe was

Levi shared Jacob's hard word with Simeon, but the tribe's zeal was turned to holiness at Sinai, when the sons of Levi rallied to Moses (Exod 32:26). Moses' blessing gives Levi the Thummim and Urim, the teaching of Torah, and the incense of the altar. Levi received no tribal allotment — forty-eight cities with their suburbs instead (Josh 21) — 'the LORD is his inheritance.' From this tribe: Moses, Aaron, Miriam, the priesthood, and John the Baptist.

Jacob's blessing — Gen 49:5-7

Simeon and Levi are brethren; instruments of cruelty are in their habitations.

O my soul, come not thou into their secret; unto their assembly, mine honour, be not thou united: for in their anger they slew a man, and in their selfwill they digged down a wall.

Cursed be their anger, for it was fierce; and their wrath, for it was cruel: I will divide them in Jacob, and scatter them in Israel.

Moses' blessing — Deut 33:8-11

And of Levi he said, Let thy Thummim and thy Urim be with thy holy one, whom thou didst prove at Massah, and with whom thou didst strive at the waters of Meribah;

Who said unto his father and to his mother, I have not seen him; neither did he acknowledge his brethren, nor knew his own children: for they have observed thy word, and kept thy covenant.

They shall teach Jacob thy judgments, and Israel thy law: they shall put incense before thee, and whole burnt sacrifice upon thine altar.

Bless, Lord, his substance, and accept the work of his hands: smite through the loins of them that rise against him, and of them that hate him, that they rise not again.
