How Chorazin Synagogue and the 'Seat of Moses' was found

The basalt synagogue ruins stood above ground. Ory's clearance in 1926 uncovered a carved basalt armchair with an Aramaic dedication to 'Yudan son of Ishmael'. Pottery under the synagogue shows the town existed in the 1st century, though the standing building is later.

What it is

A black basalt synagogue about 22 by 17 meters with carved friezes of vines, lions and a 'Medusa' face, benches along the walls, and a decorated armchair cut from a single basalt block found near the southern wall. Around it lie the houses, mikveh and olive presses of the village.

Why it matters for the Bible

Yeshua condemned Chorazin with Bethsaida and Capernaum for not repenting despite his miracles, and the site was indeed abandoned in his day and rebuilt later. The chair illustrates Matthew 23:2, where the scribes and Pharisees 'sit in Moses' seat' — a physical seat of honor for the one who read and expounded Torah.

The Hebrew word: kee-SEH

כִּסֵּא

כִּסֵּא is pronounced kee-SEH and means seat, throne, chair (Strong's H3678).
