How Dan (Laish): The Tribe's Migration Layer was found

Biran's long excavation exposed a wealthy Late Bronze city (Laish) that ended in destruction and burning, followed by a very different Iron I settlement of storage pits, collared-rim jars, and simple huts. Later came the Iron II gate and the high place, and in 1993 the Tel Dan Stele.

What it is

A large mound at the main source of the Jordan with a Middle Bronze mudbrick arched gate, still standing. The Iron I stratum (Stratum VI) is marked by dozens of pits lined with stone, collared-rim pithoi typical of the central hill country, and a poorer material culture than the Late Bronze city beneath.

Why it matters for the Bible

Shoftim 18 tells how the tribe of Dan, squeezed out of its southern territory, marched north, burned 'quiet and unsuspecting' Laish, and renamed it Dan. Biran found exactly that sequence: a peaceful, prosperous Laish destroyed by fire, then newcomers using hill-country pottery and pits like those of the Israelite settlement sites. The finds cannot name the tribe of Dan, but the fit with the text is unusually close.

The Hebrew word: LAH-yeesh

לַיִשׁ

לַיִשׁ is pronounced LAH-yeesh and means lion; the old name of Dan (Strong's H3919).
