How Tel Dan Iron Age Gate Complex was found
Uncovered on the south side of the mound: an outer gate, a paved plaza, a four-chambered inner gate, and beside the entrance a raised platform with decorated stone bases and a bench.
What it is
A ninth-century city wall about 4 m thick with an outer and inner gate of basalt and limestone. In the plaza between them stands a low platform reached by two steps with four carved stone sockets, probably for the poles of a canopy over a throne or seat, and a bench along the wall. The Tel Dan Stele fragments were found built into the plaza pavement and wall.
Why it matters for the Bible
City gates in the Bible were where elders sat, judgments were given, and kings met the people. Dan's gate preserves what such a place looked like, including a likely royal or judicial seat 'in the gate'. It also gives the stele its context: an Aramean monument set up at the gate after Hazael took the city, then smashed and reused when Israel took it back.
The Hebrew word: SHAH-ar
שַׁעַר
שַׁעַר is pronounced SHAH-ar and means gate — the civic center of a walled city (Strong's H8179).
