How Ancient Galilee Boat ('Jesus Boat') was found
A drought lowered the lake, and the two fishermen spotted the outline of a hull in the exposed mud near Ginosar. An 11-day rescue excavation freed the boat, which was floated in a polyurethane cocoon and conserved for years in a wax bath.
What it is
A wooden boat 8.2 meters long, 2.3 meters wide and 1.2 meters high, built mainly of cedar planks and oak frames with mortise-and-tenon joints, using 12 kinds of wood. It had a mast and four oars, room for about five crew and ten passengers or a heavy catch, and was patched many times before being stripped and sunk.
Why it matters for the Bible
It is the only boat of its kind from the lake and the age of Yeshua and his disciples. Its size fits the Gospels: thirteen men could sit in it, two boats could share a sinking-heavy catch, and a man could sleep on a cushion in the stern. Josephus describes boats like it in the naval battle at Magdala in 67 CE. Nothing links it to Yeshua personally.
