How Gezer Tenth-Century Destruction Layer was found
Excavating beside the six-chambered gate, the team exposed a thick burned layer with collapsed walls and smashed vessels beneath the gate-period city, then an administrative building of the gate city that was itself destroyed. Radiocarbon dating of the sequence was published in 2023 (Webster et al., PLOS ONE).
What it is
A destruction horizon of ash, fallen mudbrick and burned pottery covering a Late Iron I / early Iron IIA city, followed by a new city with the casemate wall, six-chambered gate and a large administrative building, which was destroyed in turn. Olive pits and seeds from the floors were radiocarbon dated.
Why it matters for the Bible
1 Kings 9:16 says a pharaoh burned Gezer and handed it to Shlomo (Solomon), who then rebuilt it. The Tandy team proposed that the earlier burning fits that Egyptian attack (often linked to Siamun) and that the rebuilt gate city is Solomon's. The 2023 radiocarbon study placed the building of the gate city in the tenth century and its destruction around the end of that century, which the excavators connect to Shoshenq (Shishak). Others read the dates more cautiously, and the exact fit with each biblical event is still argued, but Gezer is now one of the best-dated tenth-century sequences in Israel.

Which Bible verses does Gezer Tenth-Century Destruction Layer relate to?
Joshua 10:33, 1 Kings 9:16, 1 Kings 9:17.
Is Gezer Tenth-Century Destruction Layer authentic?
The layers and radiocarbon dates are published (Webster et al. 2023): Stratum 8 was built in the early 10th century and destroyed in its second half, which fits Shishak's campaign; a link to Siamun's dowry city is considered improbable. Matching layers to named kings remains interpretation and is debated.
