Four hundred is the period God names in advance and completes to the day: 'your offspring will be sojourners… four hundred years… and afterward they shall come out with great possessions.' Esau's four hundred men met Jacob and dread became embrace; four hundred distressed men at Adullam became David's mighty ones; Abraham weighed four hundred shekels for the first owned ground of the promise. Tav, the last letter, is the mark set on the faithful — in paleo-Hebrew, a cross — and the aleph-bet runs aleph to tav: the Aleph-Tav, the first and the last.
