Parashat Bamidbar — In the wilderness

Bamidbar (בְּמִדְבַּר) means "in the wilderness" — taken, as every parashah name is, from the portion's opening words in the Hebrew.

What Happens in Bamidbar
In the wilderness — bamidbar — of Sinai, in the tent of meeting, on the first day of the second month of the second year, YHVH orders a census: take a census of all the congregation of the children of Yisrael, by their families, by their fathers' houses, according to the number of names, every male head by head, from twenty years old and upward, all who are able to go out to war. A named leader from each tribe stands with Moshe and Aharon, and the counts roll in tribe by tribe — Reuven, Shimon, Gad, Yehudah (largest at 74,600), Yissachar, Zevulun, Efrayim, Menashe, Binyamin, Dan, Asher, Naftali — totaling 603,550 fighting men. A God who knows His people by name and by number: the slave rabble of Egypt has become an army mustered under its fathers' houses.
Then the camp is arranged, and the arrangement is a theology. The children of Yisrael shall camp each by his own standard, with the banners of their fathers' houses; at a distance around the tent of meeting shall they camp. East, toward sunrise, the standard of Yehudah with Yissachar and Zevulun — first to set out; south, Reuven's standard with Shimon and Gad; west, Efrayim's with Menashe and Binyamin; north, Dan's with Asher and Naftali, the rear guard. And in the middle, the mishkan with the Levites encamped immediately around it — a nation of hundreds of thousands ordered in concentric rings around the presence of God, marching when the cloud moves and resting when it rests. As YHVH commanded Moshe, so they camped by their standards, and so they set out.
The Levites are counted separately, and the reason is redemption arithmetic: behold, I have taken the Levites from among the children of Yisrael instead of every firstborn... for all the firstborn are Mine; on the day that I struck all the firstborn in the land of Egypt I hallowed to Me all the firstborn in Yisrael. The tribe whose zeal answered the golden calf now stands in for every household's firstborn son. Their clans receive their stations and charges: Gershon west with the curtains and coverings; Kehat south with the ark, table, menorah, and altars — the holiest burdens; Merari north with the boards, bars, pillars, and sockets; and Moshe, Aharon, and the priests camped at the sunrise entrance. The Levite males number 22,000 against 22,273 firstborn, and the 273 surplus are redeemed at five shekels each, the money given to Aharon. The portion closes with the Kehatites' danger and dignity: Aharon and his sons must first cover the holy things — the ark under the veil itself — before the carriers come, for they shall not go in to see the holy things even for a moment, lest they die. The holiest service is rendered to what is carried but never gazed upon.
