What Happens in Bechukotai
If you walk in My statutes — im bechukotai telechu — and keep My commandments and do them, the covenant blessings pour out in a cascade: rains in their season, the land yielding its increase, the trees their fruit; threshing lasting until vintage and vintage until sowing; bread to the full and dwelling in the land securely. I will give shalom in the land, and you shall lie down with none to make you afraid; five of you shall chase a hundred, and a hundred of you ten thousand. And the crown of it all is presence: I will set My dwelling among you, and My soul shall not abhor you. I will walk among you and will be your God, and you shall be My people — Eden's fellowship offered to a nation — I am YHVH your God, who broke the bars of your yoke and made you walk upright.
But if you will not listen — the tochachah, the great rebuke, descends in escalating waves, each introduced by the refrain: if in spite of this you will not listen to Me, then I will chastise you seven times more for your sins. First terror, disease, and enemies eating the harvest; then heavens like iron and earth like bronze, strength spent for nothing; then wild beasts bereaving the roads; then sword, pestilence, and bread doled out by weight; and finally the unthinkable — siege desperation, sanctuaries desolated, cities waste, and the people scattered among the nations with a drawn sword behind them, hearts so faint that the sound of a driven leaf puts them to flight. And in the desolation, an accounting long deferred: then the land shall enjoy its Shabbats, as long as it lies desolate — the rest it was denied, the land shall rest.
Yet the tochachah refuses to end in darkness. But if they confess their iniquity and the iniquity of their fathers... if their uncircumcised heart is humbled — then I will remember My covenant with Yaakov, and also My covenant with Yitzchak, and also My covenant with Avraham I will remember; and I will remember the land. The names run backward, as if God retraces the whole story to its root. And the floor under everything: yet for all that, when they are in the land of their enemies, I will not reject them, nor will I abhor them to destroy them utterly and break My covenant with them; for I am YHVH their God. Exile has a return ticket written into it from the beginning. The portion — and the book of Vayikra — then closes with the laws of voluntary devotion: vows and their valuations by age and means, the redemption of dedicated animals, houses, and fields with a fifth added, the devoted thing, and the tithe of the land and the herd — holy to YHVH.
