How Gamla and Its Synagogue was found
Gutman identified the camel-hump ridge with Josephus' description and excavated the synagogue, houses, olive presses, mikvaot and the breached town wall, together with about 2,000 ballista stones and 1,600 arrowheads from the Roman assault.
What it is
A rectangular basalt hall about 20 by 16 meters with stepped benches on all four sides, columns supporting the roof, and a mikveh beside the entrance. Built before the destruction of 67 CE, it is among the earliest synagogue buildings known, alongside Magdala, Masada and Herodium.
Why it matters for the Bible
It shows that synagogues as buildings existed in Galilee and the Golan in Yeshua's lifetime, answering doubts raised by the scarcity of early synagogue remains. Josephus, who fortified Gamla himself, describes its fall in detail; the arrowheads and breach match his account, and Gamla is a mirror of what awaited Jerusalem in 70 CE.
